The Need

Eating Disorders:

Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders affect an estimated eight million Americans, many of them students in the nation's middle schools, high schools and colleges. The most deadly of eating disorders is Anorexia Nervosa.

Who is at Risk:

  • 90-95% of cases involves females
  • 60% of athletes in appearance sports
  • 0.1 – 0.2 % of adolescents
  • 1% teenage girls
  • 20% of college women

Outcome of Anorexia Nervosa:

  • 50% good outcome
  • 33 % intermediate recovery
  • 20 % remain chronically ill
  • 10 - 18% die
  • 5% of patients die a decade after follow up

Outcome of Bulimia Nervosa:

  • 70% report symptom reduction
  • Outpatient treatment response (6 yr)
  • 60% good
  • 29% intermediate
  • 10% poor
  • 1% death
